The Environmental Engineering Program at Washington University provides an integrated engineering and scientific basis for individuals focusing on the improvement and management of the quality of our environment. Courses and research include not only traditional areas such as pollution control technology and contaminant transport modeling, but also newly emerging and interdisciplinary areas such as environmentally benign processing and sustainable development.

The Environmental Engineering Program is sponsored by four departments: Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Engineering and Policy, and Mechanical Engineering. The program offers many options for pursuing graduate work in environmental engineering:

  • The Master or Doctor of Science in Environmental Engineering is available from the program directly.
  • The Master or Doctor of Science in Chemical Engineering with an emphasis in Environmental Engineering is available from the Department of Chemical Engineering.
  • A Joint Degree Program enables the student to obtain both a J.D. from the School of Law and an M.S. in Environmental Engineering from the School of Engineering and Applied Science.
  • The Master of Engineering Management with a concentration in environmental management is available from the Department of Engineering and Policy.

The interdisciplinary structure of the Environmental Engineering Program incorporates several engineering specialties together with science, regulatory, and management aspects of this challenging field. In addition, the program takes advantage of the breadth of environmental research and course offerings throughout Washington University. For example, graduate students in the Environmental Engineering Program can take elective courses in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences, or the other Arts and Sciences departments represented in the University-wide Environmental Studies Program.
