Health Effects
Title: Health Effects
Description: Air quality over Houston is normal at present and there have been no documented adverse health effects from Central American smoke to date. There is no substantive evidence at this point to support the possibility of significant lung damage from this event. Anecdotal cases should be investigated with serial pulmonary function tests (including spirometry, lung volumes and diffusing capacity) if anyone thinks that a lung injury has occurred as a result of this event. Given the extent of spread and attention given to this smoke, the lack of documented ill-effects is notable.

Re: Health Effects
Title: Re: Health Effects
Description: This was sent to me via email today (5/20/1998):

I just returned east from a weekend in Dallas and experienced a severe asthmatic attack. Since I do not have asthma I attribute the illness to the air in Texas being contaminated by the smoke from the fires burning in Mexico. Can you tell me how damaging the short and long term effect of this condition is to my lungs? or can you tell me who to contact that can give me further information?

Health Effects
Title: Health Effects
Description: Has anyone documented any adverse health effects from the Central American smoke? At this point we do not have any documented ill effects on health in Houston, although there may be an increased incidence of breathing-related complaints at the two County hospitals who serve the indigent.

Spectral aerosol optical depth data on fires
Title: Spectral aerosol optical depth data on fires
Description: I have access to multifilter rotating shadowband radiometer data from various sites in the US (mainly). These data can be used to derive estimates of aerosol optical depth as a function of wavelength. I am in the process of looking at these data for sites impacted by the fires in Central America and plan to report on these results at this website.

St. Louis PM10 concentration reaches 135 ug/m3
Title: St. Louis PM10 concentration reaches 135 ug/m3
Description: The city of St. Louis has a beta gauge that continuously records the PM10 concentration. Throughout the past week, the concentrations ranged between 10 and 70 ug/m3. As the smoke moved in on Thursday the 14th, the PM10 has been rising to 135 ug/m3. Evidently, this is a record concentration for the city (?). One could speculate that most of the PM10 is PM2.5 and that the PM2.5 concentration is now at least 100 ug/m3. The new standard for daily max. is 65 ug/m3.

The Air Quality Laboratory has been running a PM-2.5 FRM on the roof of Urbauer Hall at Washington University in St. Louis since the unit arrived a few weeks back. On Wednesday, May 13, the 24-hour average PM-2.5 was 27 micrograms per cubic meter, and on Friday, May 15, the 24-hour average PM-2.5 was 68 micrograms per cubic meter! The latter value is larger than any 24-hour average concentration recorded by the dichot operated by St. Louis County at the Clayton site - only a few miles from the university - over the past decade (more than 400 samples). Recently we have been running a dichot at various locations in the St. Louis area and for eighteen samples over the period Nov '97 - Mar '98 observed maximum, average, and minimum fine PM values of 37, 16, and 5 micrograms per cubic meter, respectively. Thus, Friday was quite an event!

Smoke heading to Canada and the Eas Coast?
Title: Smoke heading to Canada and the Eas Coast?
Description: OK, virtual community, this may be a good way to start this Tech Forum: I have just posted a color SeaWiFS image of the BigSmoke over the Eastern US taken on Thursday, May 14th and a GOES 8 image of today the 15th. It appears to me that both Canada and the East Coast might get hit by the smoke. I have dipatched heads-up notes about this to Canadian and East Coast friends. Looking forward for some interaction.

Draft: The Impact of the 1998 Central American Smoke on the Atmospheric Environment of Eastern North America
Title: Draft: The Impact of the 1998 Central American Smoke on the Atmospheric Environment of Eastern North America
DocURL: /Central-America/reports/JGR/SmokeImpactJGRDoc.htm
Description: Draft paper. On May 14 and 15 the 4000 km contiguous smoke plume stretched from Guatemala to Hudson Bay in Canada. The location of fires was detected by the DMSP and AVHRR satellite sensors, the smoke's spatial and temporal distribution was derived from the TOMS satellite and surface visibility measurements, and the aerosol spectral reflectance was derived from the SeaWiFS satellite data. Along the smoke plume the visual range was below 5 km, and aerosol concentrations were above 100 mg/m3 (> 500 umg/m3 in Brownsville, TX). At least 70% of the smoke aerosol was below 2.5 mm in size and composed of organics (50%), elemental carbon (2%) and an inexplicably high (26%) fraction of sulfate. The smoke aerosol has reduced the amount of solar radiation reaching the surface and increased the surface albedo by 10-30% in the near UV. An unexplained feature of the smoke is the yellowish coloration since it is not known whether it is due to pure scattering or preferential absorption in the near UV.
