Exploring NOAA-NESDIS HMS Fire Pixel
Data with DataFed
The applications presented below use DataFed web services to build a dynamic application that allows for customized maps and tools for browsing and analyzing fire data. The maps are generated on-the-fly using a “chain” of web services. The image URL can be embedded and controlled in other web applications. The applications use data from the NOAA-NESDIS Hazard Mapping System that provides North American fire location and smoke plume data derived from MODIS, GOES, and AVHRR.

Spatial Aggregation of Fire Detection Pixels from the NOAA Hazard Mapping System where fire detections are counted (summed) within a specified area, this example uses an aggregation radius of 50 km. Continental US – compare spatial and temporal
patterns among HMS, GOES, Alaska – compare spatial and temporal patterns among
HMS, GOES, |

Satellite Fire Pixel Comparison – Spatially compare fire pixels for a given day derived from MODIS and GOES-ABBA by overlaying them on a map. |

Aggregate Fire Pixels – Visually compare fire
locations from two datasets specifying a time range. (Requires
Internet Explorer) |
|
|
Fire Location Comparison – Compare fire locations in one dataset with their “nearest neighbor” in space and time from a second dataset. (Requires Internet Explorer) |

Fire Pixel Location Over a Time Span -- Compare fire location over a specified time range in one dataset with their “nearest neighbors” in a second dataset. (Requires Internet Explorer) |
