Summary of the OTAG Air Quality Analysis Workgroup

This is a summary of the AQA Workgroup activities that is considered to be of interest to the OTAG Policy Group and the Subgroups. The presentation is given in the form of questions and answers. Some questions were stated even when answers are incomplete. The questions fall into the following major categories:

Origins and patterns of ozone in the OTAG domain
What is the origin and magnitude of the ozone background concentrations entering the OTAG domain?
What is the pattern of ozone precursor emissions in the OTAG domain?
How do background concentrations change as air passes through the OTAG domain?
What is the origin of high ozone concentrations?

Ozone transport in the OTAG Domain
What is the role of horizontal and vertical transport?
What is the lifetime of ozone and precursors over the OTAG region?
What is the spatial pattern of high and low ozone concentrations?
What is the duration of ozone events?
Ranges of ozone AOIs based on multiplicity of evidence

Ozone exceedences and nonattainment
What are the areas of violations (AOV) for the 1hr-120 ppb and 8hr-80 ppb exceedences
What are the differences between the 1 hr -120 ppb and 8 hr - 80 ppb standards?

OTAG modeling episodes: Description and comparison with climatological data.
How do the ozone concentrations during the OTAG modeling episodes compare to the climatological values?
How do the transport conditions compare to the climatological pattern?

AQA results relevant of control options
Is the OTAG domain a well defined air quality control region?
Based on AQ data, are the control options different for area and point sources?
Is there evidence that precursor emission changes cause ozone concentration changes?
Do AQ data suggest high-leverage means of ozone controls?
Do AQ data support the use of UAM-V model use to evaluate control options?
