Comments on What is the magnitude of regional ozone outside NA areas?

Regional ozone levels

In general, maximum peak ozone levels in and around major urban areas exceed
those in more rural areas. In contrast, minimum peak ozone
levels in and around major urban areas are at or below those
in the more rural areas. An interesting feature in the OTAG
domain is that minimum peak ozone levels in the center of the
domain (generally the Ohio River valley) are higher than those
in the major urban areas. This suggests that there is something
about the nature of the sources in that area (more point sources
vs area, more NOx vs VOC, more high-level vs low-level, other?) that contributes to
continously high regional ozone levels which in turn exacerbates the problem of
transport between major urban areas during episodes. Further, trajectory analyses
tend to point to this area when transport results in high ozone
levels at remote sites.
