Submit Comment under Activities Not Working??
I tried to submit the comment and introduction of the regional modeling web page under activities. I was not able to and had to submit the comment under Reports. Is this a unique problem, or is there some bug at work?

Re: Submit Comment under Activities Not Working??
There was a problem concerning most of the files in NEARDAT which were using parts of an older system currently in use. The problem described above has been fixed. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Automatic Addition of "Submit Comment" Button
Is there a way that a "Submit Comment" button could automatically be added at the bottom of each newly submitted report, data set, etc.?

Letter of confirmation
Hi Betty Poirot , thanks for registering with NEARDAT. This is an idependent confirmation that your (sometimes) brilliant husband has indeed been spending many hours on NEARDAT. In fact you could call it his babe - his hands are all over this NearThing.

Idea for NEARDAT
In addition to the general people registration that exists, it would be nice for users to "register" for individual pages so that whenever a change or addition to the mercury page or the PAMS page is made, interested users can be notified automatically.

Re: Idea for NEARDAT
It is my undestanding that the next version of the web browsers (not servers) will allow you to 'subscribe' to specific pages. The browser will scan and notify you for changes.

A Few (Simple?) Suggestions for NEARDAT
(1) The Forum/Discussion pages have the potential to get quite long. Can we fix NEARDAT so that you can browse all comments/responses by their "Description", and then click on the description for the main text? (2) I like the fact that the most recent Forum/Discussion submittals appear on top, but it's hard to tell the age of the one's below. Can we have them automatically date-stamped when they are submitted? (3) Can we alphabetize the People page, rather than placing the most recent submittals on top? (4) Finally, every time I log on, or return to the NEARDAT home page from other pages, I have to scroll through the introductory text to get back to the main features. Can we just have a button at the top that says "What's NEARDAT?" When the button is clicked, the user will get a nice intro. This would continue to make the site friendly to newcomers while not inconveniencing oldcomers.

Re: A Few (Simple?) Suggestions for NEARDAT
Lee, these are super suggestrions. True user feedback. I think that all of these will be incorporated into the new frame-based design to be tested shortly. It will be similar to the Microsoft website.
By the way my Computer Science MS student, Marin Bezic, is the third CAPITA alumnus (Todd Oberman, Kari Hoijarvi) who got lured to work for Microsoft. A true brain-drain from the third-world state to real America!

The "Submit" button under "Web Links" doesn't work. This might be a good way to encourage new users to share their stuff.

Fixed "Submit New Entry" Button at bottom of NEARDAT Web Links page.

Are we sure the "Submit New Entry" button under weblinks is fixed? I recently (think I) submitted a link to the (very nice) NOAA ARL READY site (http://www.arl.noaa.gov/ready/hysplit4.html) which didn't seem to get recorded.

missing links
Under NEARDAT "Technical Reports", the hyperlink to the report entitled: Preview of 1994 Ozone Precursor Concentrations in the Northeastern U.S doesn't work. The currently specified link (as of 4/3/97) is:
http://capita.wustl.edu/NEARDAT/Reports/PAMS94/nepams_c.html

I think this would work if it were changed to: http://capita.wustl.edu/nescaum/Reports/PAMS94/nepams_c.html
or if the file were moved to the similarly named NEARDAT directory

Conversely, the link in the OTAG Air Quality analysis website to the report entitled: "1992 Regional Ozone Concentrations in the Northeastern United States" no longer functions there. That link is specified as: http://capita.wustl.edu/NESCAUM/Reports/NEozone92/avoz0.html

but the file has aparently been moved to a sililarly-named NEARDAT directory.

NEARDAT - a regional, distributed Website
I think that a regionally-oriented, web-baced facility for routine data analysis seems currently justified (not if but when/how). I propose we consider making this a somewhat, but not vastly, larger than NESCAUM regional AQA site. Need a acronym - (NorthEast Airshed Regional Data Analysis Toolshed) - NEARDAT (as in lets not go NEARDAT). Help???
Two general approaches to the website management seem worth considering:
1. DISTRIBUTE THE EFFORT. For example, NESCAUM/State staff might take on more of the website-management responsibilities (for example, preparation and posting of some regional data sets, HTML documents, pdf, Powerpoint, gif animations, - whatever tasks are "transferable". I would be willing (and possibly able) to take on some management responsibilities. This would require some initial investment of CAPITA time, but could hopefully save time in the long run.
2. IDENTIFY OTER FUNDING AND USAGE PARTNERS. (e.g. EPA OAQPS-PAMS, EPA Region I, NARSTO-NE, MARAMA, NERAQC (Northeast Regional Air Quality Committee) - which includes NE States, Federal Land Managers and Eastern Canadian Counterparts), Forest Service/VMC. Also, I really like the idea of trying to include an Eastern Canadian connection - maybe through the NERAQC group which claims to have a strong interest in coordinated regional airshed management, and data exchange/analysis, but hasn't really made it happen yet. Also theres this NAFTA-related CEC organization (http://www.cec.org/) which might represent an appropriate funding source for such.

Re: Possible NERAQC role
Having attended the recently held meeting of NERAQC (Northeast Regional Air Quality Committee) at Campobello on June 2,3 1997, initial
response to the use of the NEARDAT Web site by the NERAQC group seemed positive. There may be
some issues related to how the site might actually be utilized by NERAQC which need to be
thought about more carefully. NERAQC's primary focus is on air quality and air quality related values in National and Provincial Parks
requiring special protection under programs like the U.S. PSD program. This focus includes
transboundary air pollution transport issues. As its name implies, the regional focus is
in the northeastearn part of North America. At a minimum, it would seem appropriate that a descriptive page
detailing the activities being undertaken by NERAQC and its focus on AQ issues in Class I areas (U.S.) and
Eastern Provincial Parks (Canada) be linked from the NEARDAT page. The members of NERAQC have been invited to
register on the NEARDAT site and to participate in the development of the site.

Web magic at work. You say it there and viola, the website just transforms itself into NEARDAT (neat what again?).

Solicitation of comments on NEARDAT
The Forum page is a good place to conduct general discussion on NEARDAT. Unless it is personal or it is an insignificant detail, submit your comments publicly here rather than through e-mail.

Good luck, NEARDAT!
